Another book I got to read and post a blog about. Let me tell you, I was soooo excited to get to read this one! I love Cindy Woodsmall! Curt got me her first 2 books, When the Soul Mends and When the Morning Comes. She also has a 3rd one of that series, I have yet to read. It's called When the Soul Mends.
I love reading books based on Amish characters. This book, Hope of Refuge has 2 pages in the back where they have the Pennsylvania Dutch words, then has the English word for it. I've read so many Amish books, I didn't need to reference back! ;o)
I love it when books grab you right after the 1st page, and this one did for me! I couldn't put it down...
Cara was raised in Foster Care after her mother died. Her dad was a drunk... When she was just a child, her mother took her to Dry Lake, PA to visit some "friends". Cara doesn't really remember going there...
Cara has a little girl, Lori. She is a struggling single mom who is trying to make ends meet, and to top it off, she has a stalker. When her stalkers finds her this last time, he goes through her house and reads her diary. He calls her at her place of employment and tell her he found out about Lori and what she likes and everything! Cara decides to go get Lori from school and leave right then and there. With only the clothes on their backs, and very little money, she heads to the bus station. She is unsure where to go... Lori starts looking at her mom's diary, flipping pages. There is one spot that has a box around it, and it is blank. Lori asks her mom why, Cara didn't remember. So Lori asks if she could write her name in it and her mom agrees. Lori starts writing her name and Cara sees something... (you have to read the book to see what it is and how they figure out where to go... I have one to give away... ;o))
An Amish man named Ephraim decides to help Cara and Lori out. He ends up getting shunned because they are living in his house. His father has major health issues and Ephraim is running the cabinet shop for him. Since Ephraim got shunned, he is no longer allowed to work at the shop. His dad has another bad episode and so Ephraim is forced to have Cara and Lori move out so he can go see his dad and take over the shop yet again.
Ephraim is torn between requirements of his community and doing what he believe is the right thing. He risks losing everything! Including the friendship he developed with Cara and Lori. What will he choose to do???
